Horse Riding in Fox Glacier

Situated on 100 acres of stunning West Coast land just 6kms south of the Fox Glacier town-ship you will find the home of our Horse Riding family.  With 16 well trained and experienced horses there is a mount to match your riding ability and in no time at all you’ll be off to explore places that are not accessible to the general public, that’s special.

Glacier Country Easy Rider
(1 hour)

Are you a beginner horse rider?  If so, then this 1-hour ride is tailor-made for you.

You will be introduced to the joys of horse riding by your experienced guide who is passionate about their horses and showcasing the stunning Fox Glacier area. Listen carefully as you learn how to ride your horse safely which will build confidence quickly.  You will get to know your horse’s personality as each one has its own story to enjoy.

Going no faster than a gentle walking pace you will explore eclectic West Coast land bordered by the braided, glacial fed Cook River. Amble through native New Zealand bush, over farmland and on a clear day, you will have views towards the magnificent Te Tiritiri-o-te-Moana/Southern Alps, including New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mt Cook.

There is plenty of time to take photographs, capturing special memories to take home with you.

Glacier Country River Trek
(Half Day)  

Designed for the more experienced rider who wants to roam further, ride faster and learn more about the landscape which has been carved out by Te Moeka o Tūawe/Fox Glacier over thousands of years. 

Riding southward you will cross Bullock Creek and walk along the braided Cook River all the while getting to know your well-trained mount and listening to your guide who knows these parts like the “back of their hand”.  At approximately halfway you will arrive at the Salt Water Flats where you can enjoy the exhilaration and freedom of trotting, cantering and/or galloping.   It is also where, on a clear day you will be “wowed” by the wide and wonderful views of the unique West Coast landscape including the Te Tiritiri-o-te-Moana/Southern Alps. See if you can spot New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mt Cook?  You will make your way home via a trail that is chosen by your guide on the day.

River to Sea Trek
(Full Day)

This full day horse trek for experienced riders explores some of what makes the West Coast so special, that short distance which takes you from mountain to rainforest to the shores of the Tasman Sea in no time at all. Your return ride will be approximately 26 km and starts off following a similar path as the Half Day Trek.

Continuing on your ride from Salt Water Flats towards the coastline you will climb a short hill taking time at the top to enjoy the 360 degree superlative views of the Southern Alps, the braided Cook river, farmland and out to the Tasman Sea.

Descending down to the sea you will ride along this untamed beach and your guide will find the perfect spot for your idyllic picnic lunch.
Take time to enjoy where you are before you head home, it is a place not easily accessed by other people, a place where you are away from it all.
Enjoy your memories of the untamed, natural wilderness of the Fox Glacier area.
